Many students ask me, “Am I saying this correctly? Have I written it the right way?” Let’s review how to properly use numbers with adjectives and do it the right way! Compound adjectives are an advanced form of adjective that is formed by joining 2 or more adjectives that are describing the same noun. Using numbers is also a part of this. If I ask, “How old is your baby?” “She is 6 months old.” (Notice the –s on the end of month because it is a plural number. Any number higher than 1 will require this –s on the noun.) But notice the change when I combine those adjectives together to form an advanced adjective. “My friend has a 6-month old baby.” (Note: there is no longer an –s on month!) Check out these examples: I ran for 20 miles. She traveled for 5 days. Jo’s building is 20 stories high. A 20-mile run A 5-day trip A 20-story building Keep practicing! Are you sure you’re pronouncing the -ed at the end of the regular past tense verbs correctly? There are only 3 sounds: /id/, /t/ and /d/. It is never pronounced as “walk-ed” but instead is “walk-t”. Writing is often the last skill English language learners face. First speaking and listening, then reading and conversation... Writing is always last. So change it! Start to write in English on your own if you do not get the practice in class. Write emails. Write summaries or reviews of your favorite movie or You Tube videos. Write postcards or letters to friends and relatives. Try to write a short story or poem. And try to write some essays too. With practice you can become an English writer and feel confident when you put pen to paper.
